Dead Kitty Chopper to Catch Flying Mice
Jun 4th
One of the more inventive uses for a dead cat is to convert it into a flying machine like Dutch artist Bart Jansen. The cat, named Orville Wright, has a fitting afterlife suitable for his namesake.
The full story is at the Daily Mail here along with a crummy video that really doesn’t show Orville doing much more than getting off the ground.
I have a cat here that I’d love to convert into a flying machine for Father’s Day. Yeah, I’m lookin’ at you Rogue!

Zimmerman’s Portrait – in Skittles
Apr 14th
This is pure awesome, and perhaps the most delicious portrayal of George Zimmerman.
From Yahoo here:
A Denver artist has created a portrait of Florida shooting suspect George Zimmerman using more than 12,000 Skittles — the candy that 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was carrying when Zimmerman fatally shot him.
The 3-by-4-foot portrait was done by 31-year-old Andy Bell, an art student about to graduate from Metropolitan State College in Denver.
Bell titled it “Fear Itself.”

New Van Gogh Painting Found
Mar 20th
Its not everyday that you get to see a new work of art by a dead guy. People always go gaga over finding a new music track by Michael Jackson or Tupac. That type of art to me is crap. But this is pretty spectacular. This new painting by Vincent Van Gogh is titled “Still life with meadow flowers and roses.”
From the AP here:
The Kroeller Mueller Museum says new X-ray research has finally put beyond doubt that “Still life with meadow flowers and roses” really is by Van Gogh. It has also uncovered in greater detail an art school study by Van Gogh of two wrestlers concealed on the same canvas and invisible to the naked eye.

Cool Bonsai Treehouse
Feb 19th
To me, the next logical step of creating tiny trees would be to create tiny treehouses. And better yet, tiny treehouse megaplexes! Takanori Aiba has several more examples of his miniature masterpieces at his site here.

Indian Boys Need to Behave

Indian Boys Need to Behave, a photo by BelchSpeak on Flickr.
I saw this really bizarre calendar in a nearby store. I especially enjoy the instructions to round up all the lost little boys and turn them over to the Gestapo.

Nightmare Fuel: Beavis and Butthead in Real Life
Jan 20th
A makeup artist created lifelike busts of what Beavis and Butthead would look like if they were real people, and all I can say is these guys would have trouble getting anyone to pump their gas much less a table at a restaurant.
You can see the rest here, including the very frightening closeup of Beavis.

Spirit of Detroit Statue
Jan 19th

Spirit of Detroit, a photo by kaszeta on Flickr.
This statue is one of the few cool things to look at in Detroit in addition to some fantastic gothic architecture. The statue is supposed to symbolize a relationship with God, but it looks like a huge blue guy is going to crush a tiny family with a painful spikey ball.
Leave it to Detroit to evoke images of being all stabby.

Family Night Fun
Dec 19th
We got to eat out at Cheeburger Cheeburger, pick up our “Roast Beast,” a gorgeous boneless ribeye roast for Christmas Dinner, and then we went exploring for Christmas Lights of Tacky Houses in Fairfax County, as outlined on a website Jess found here. And that’s how we stumbled on this house, which has a coordinated lightshow broadcast over an unused band of FM radio.
The narrow lane was packed for the Rocky Run Christmas Lights Show, so we only stayed for about 5 minutes, but we intend to go back for an extended viewing. And I’ll be packing egg nog.

Painting a Toy Car
Nov 12th
Before bedtime, Cartney wanted to tackle an art project. He had picked up a wooden toy car at an art show and was asking if he could paint it blue, add eyes and a mouth, and paint the wheels.
Of course, as a bonus, he gets to use Mom’s art supplies.
And this artist desk sure has seen a lot of miles since it was installed.
And here is the finished product!

Turn Your Kids’ Bizarre Drawings into Awesome Plushies
Oct 26th
My kid is beginning to show some promise as an artist. Maybe soon we can ship off one of his drawings to Child’s own Studio and get a plushie made from the concept art.
Check out their site here.

Tribute in Lights
Sep 11th
My delayed flight back from New York last Thursday night was a very bumpy one. The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee was dumping floodwaters from my home up through Pennsylvania and the clouds were beginning to encroach on the NYC area too. My wife kept texting that she was bailing water out of our basement, and I just wanted to get home. As we circled New York on the ascent from LaGuardia to head south, I saw a brief break in the clouds and could see what appeared to be giant lasers shooting into the sky. And then I realized that even with a bumpy ride and flooded basement, I at least, was getting to go home again.
You can see more of John Deguzman’s pics here.

Disgusting Porn Star Uses Baby as Prop for her “Art”
Aug 17th
Meet Tina Butcher, aka Madison Young. This porn star got knocked up, but refused to let pregnancy or becoming a mother dissuade her from her onscreen pornography. In fact, she is doubling down and using her newborn as a prop in her San Francisco (of course) art gallery.
Besides taking sexualized photos with an infant, Butcher also uses her own unpasteurized (and likely Hep-C infected) breastmilk as a dessert topping for guests at her gallery. Hilariously, only lesbians and gays seem to want to eat that.
From T&S here:
My exhibit Becoming MILF was a visual and performative journey through my pregnancy and into the throws of motherhood while still working in the sex industry. I wanted to express the challenges of balancing the life of the whore and the madonna at the same time. At the opening reception I sat in a corner hand whisking whipped topping for milkshakes while pumping breast milk, and then added the breast milk to the whipped topping. I was using traditional women’s work and the re-appropriating of my breasts for nourishment to create a dessert, encouraging gallery goers to address their thoughts on breastfeeding, breasts of mothers versus breasts of adult film actresses, and the consumption of breast milk past infancy.
Why is it that liberals think that grossing people out and using pornography is art? Jackass did gross-out stunts in public too, and no one called that art.

Crazed Art Lady Attacks Again
Aug 15th

Henri Matisse – The Plumed Hat at National Art Gallery Washington, DC, originally uploaded by mbell1975.
I wrote about Susan Burns back in April when she went to the National gallery of Art in Washington DC and attacked a painting by Gaugin.
She is back now and has attacked another painting, The Plumed Hat by Henri Matisse. No word on why this painting was targeted, but Burns confesses to hearing voices in her head. Maybe she just hates paintings of women?

You’ve Got Green on You
Aug 2nd
James Hance makes really great pop-art crossover prints and you can see them all on his website here. This is my favorite because of the Shaun of the Dead reference.
Wow, I wonder if this artist got a letter from the Muppets lawyers threatening to sue him like the one I received?

Had to snap this photo of a mural in a keywest dockside ice cream parlor. We are now enjoying a couple of days in Lauderdale By The Sea for fun in the sand and surf.
