Rodney King Gets New House
I caught Sober House last night on VH-1. Dr. Drew is a little bit of a hero of mine because of the way he has a no excuses approach to dealing with behavior and addiction. But his drawback is that he is doing his practice on television, where it can do both some real good and some real bad. Case in point: He gave Rodney King a new house. Yes, that Rodney King. Rodney King’s behavior directly contributed to the deaths of 53 people in the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The 4 Million dollars cash reward for his bad behavior was wasted on a stupid Hip Hop recording studio and a grocery-cart full of crack and malt liquor.
I would never begrudge an addict an opportunity to get himself clean and sober. But to give this reprehensible dirtbag a free house is irresponsible and will not help Rodney kick his addiction. In fact, during one of the moments on the show last night where they use hopeful yet sad music as a soundtrack to this idiot’s tearful missives, he claimed that he had trouble forgiving the police that beat him. So after all these years, Rodney King still has never admitted his fault for the predicament he put himself in and for the terrible consequences of the subsequent riots.
Maybe Rodney King will really straighten his life out now. But I don’t for a second believe he will. He stands a better chance of burning down his new house when his new Meth lab explodes.
Judy, so you are claiming that someone got you addicted to painkillers against your will? That’s just what an addict would say. Way to avoid any personal responsibility, which is the point of this post.

Pat, No, I didn’t say I became addicted against my will. I had no choice with the painkillers or deal with kidney stone pain. But when the first lot of stones were cleared, I was addicted.
Either pain, or painkillers. I never had a problem with anything like that up until that time. So, it is correct in saying that the doctor’s were the ones who got me started. I don’t shift any blame on them. It was the way it was. Anyway, enough of this is enough. I have a life.
pat – I was looking for some info on Rodney’s new sober house and regretably stumbled upon your post. Before I comment I would like to let you know a few things about me so there won’t be any “assumptions” on your end. I am a caucasion woman. Born and raised in northeast part of the country. Lived in major cities with all races and sexual orientation. I have had no addictions in my life. I am a nurse with 20 yrs experience working on an alcohol and chemical dependency unit in a major hosp. I do not harbor any “feelings” for this man, nor have I ever met him. However, I would welcome the opportunity to meet and shake his hand and wish him well on his road to recovery. On that note I would like to clear up a misconception that you have regarding Rodneys addiction. According to the show, Rodneys addiction was to alcohol only. Therefore, I highly doubt Rodneys remodeled home is going to blow up or burn to the ground due to a “meth lab”. I’m sure you’ll be disappointed!! And just so you , your children, and your childrens children know, HATE was the accelerate in this history maker!! Therefore, that would make YOU responsible for 53 deaths!! Wake up pat! It is 2009. Haters are the new “minority” and quite frankly, are a plague in our society!! Remember pat, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem!
Sherry, thanks for takin gthe time to write. Have you found any information on Rodney’s sober house? I would be interested in learning how its going. I have a feeling you won’t find a lot of happy stories coming out of that house, however.
As a chemical dependency nurse, you of all people would know that it is rarely just a single drug that drives addictions. Judging by the filth and the disarray of the house prior to the renovation, it looked like a hard core junkie lived there. I suspect that he abuses other drugs with alcohol, the least of which is marijuana.
And sorry, I reject your pathetic attempt to tarnish me as someone who is spouting anything that is hateful. Hate did have lots to do with the riots, but as I recall it was a lot of black racism and hatred of white people that burned down huge swaths of Los Angeles.

I simply disagree with you. Addicts avoid real problems in life and instead cling to easy choices. Yes, staying clean is tough- and no, you don’t have to be an addict to understand this. Dr. Drew is not an addict and he knows better than everyone what addiction does to people. I wish you all the best as you continue your recovery.
You bring up a great point about Rodney’s “old playground” where he spent so much of his time high. I remember one episode of the show that I found to be shocking- when the drummer out of rehab was looking at every street corner and identifying who could sell him drugs, and where he used to get high. Dr. Drew preached how those types of places needed to be avoided. Did Dr. Drew simply remodeling Rodney’s house do enough to change the old playground? I don’t know.
In a way, I don’t think I would have been as upset about this if he was given a whole new home far away from his old city- but still it wasn’t something that Rodney did to earn it- and without a sense of accomplishment I seriously doubt that this gift will be valued.
It’s amazing how such ignorance STILL resides in the most powerful country on earth. Pat, though many people on this blog say they wish even people like you would never go through any type of addiction, I disagree. I am ashamed to admit it, but you have now brought me down to your slimy level.
