Islamic Misogyny Celebrated as Photo of the Year
A woman in Afghanistan fled from her abusive husband at the age of 18. Her husband tracked her down and, in a punishment in accordance with Islamic law, her brother-in-law held her down while her husband sawed off her ears and nose with a knife by hand.
Her husband then abandoned her after the brutal assault and she was rescued by American soldiers and sent to America for reconstructive surgery. This photo by South African Jodi Bieber won the prize for the World Press Photo of the Year.
