Electric Tickle Machine – “Blew it Again” Album Review

Nowadays most rock albums are over-produced to remove sound impurities. You get vocals that have been autotuned. Drums that have been resynched with a bass guitar. When you go to see live music, these impurities are back, and it reminds the listener that you aren’t listening to a digital recording, but to enthusiastic musicians sharing their work in the form of music.

Electric Tickle Machine kept those impurities in their album “Blew it Again” available here on iTunes and it makes the music more genuine, and delivers their intended message that the Tickles don’t want to be just another band from New York, but want to keep their garage sound and be true to their expressions. They want their album to have the same sound you would get if you packed yourself into a small venue with their fans.

The track “Part of Me” will likely have the broadest popular appeal as it is decidedly upbeat and has a great hook. You can hear that track on a previous post here. But even with this song you get a great idea about what the rest of the album is like. Most of the lyrics sound like playground taunts set to a rock beat, sang by lead vocalist Tom Laplaige, who sounds like a throwback to Bob Dylan. In the track “Ask me Anything,” the keyboard skills of Ryan Renn combines with Laplaige’s guitar and vocals to produce a sound a little like Modest Mouse.
