Jordanian Pepsi Cans

After a very long flight, I made it to Amman okay. I was able to figure out the electrical outlets and it took me a while to figure out why there was a second toilet in the hotel bathroom. Turns out I think its a sink to wash your dirty feet or something. Also, for some reason the Pepsi cans have horses on them and the scrawled logo looks pretty bizarre. Also, they have pull tabs- the type you could cut your finger on if you weren’t used to them. I think I remember operating cans like this when I was 9.

Another bonus of being on this side of the Atlantic is that Budweiser Beer tastes better.  It has 5 % alcohol instead of 4.5, and it really brings out the beechwood taste.  I knocked back quite a few of those downstairs in the “American-style sports bar” at the hotel.  It looked like an American sports bar, but the music was arabic disco cranked 40 decibels too loud.  Its so loud you can hear the music rising up out of the plumbing in the room.

Do not talk about fight club. Oops.

  • Ah-ha! So you are staying at the Marriott! Eat at the steak place across the hall from the sports bar. Oh – and if you are going to take a cab – make sure you get the price determined for your ride in advance. Funny how prices go up with American’s. Jordanian cab drivers see dollars when they look at us…

  • BT,
Yeah, I ate at the Marriott at the “library” which is a cigar bar/wine bar/steak bar.

wow. Great steak, and delicious sides. I think mine own on my grill at home are still as good if not better, but this steak at the Marriott was phenomenal. And you were right about the wine too. My party of three walked out with a 250 dinar tab. Well worth it. thanks for urging me to go! When my boss comes in a few days, I will try to talk him into treating us again. 🙂

  • I didn’t mention the cigars – didn’t know if you were into that or not, Pat.

Not to say steak on the grill in the States isn’t better – but if you think it is easy to get a GOOD US steak in the Middle East – you’d be wrong.

Didn’t happen to notice, did you, Pat, how many “locals” were in the pubs and bars? But, wait. Alcohol is haram!

  • P.S. All the cans have pull-tabs, over here. I might be dating myself, but do you remember making chains with them?

  • I do remember using pull tabs when I was a kid. I remember that someone made chains with them, but I know that I didn’t because those things were sharp!

And for your comment about alcohol being haram, I haven’t seen a whole lot of locals abusing alcohol. Most people know how to behave. I have a future blog post about one drunk Arab dude. Stay tuned for that!

I think they abuse the hell out of music. I heard a Madonna remix arabic-style and it made my toenails curl.

I got into town on Valentines Night. Two guys were double dating these two ladies and the dudes were dressed in bright red silk shirts, with baggy pants and their underwear was poking up out of the back. It was tacky.
