WTC Steel in Coast Guard USS New York LPD 21

This new ship being built in New Orleans will contain 20 tons of recycled steel taken from the World Trade Center. It will be an awesome ship, and will ensure that the United States will NEVER FORGET.

From WTVM here:

PASCAGOULA, Miss. Three Coast Guard cutters will bear the names New York, Arlington and Summerset to commemorate the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.

The U-S-S New York is being built at Northrop Grumman’s New Orleans location. The hull of the ship will contain more than 20 tons of recycled steel taken from the World Trade Center.

And from Military.com here:

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite, La., to cast the ship’s bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, “those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence,” recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. “It was a spiritual moment for everybody there.”

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the “hair on my neck stood up.”

“It had a big meaning to it for all of us,” he said. “They knocked us down. They can’t keep us down. We’re going to be back.”

I find it odd that the Coast Guard will want an Amphibious Transport Dock ship. But something like this would be a huge help during hurricane disaster relief. It will be a San Antonio Class ship. This thing will have a missile launcher!

Check out these pics below.

This ship is huge and will carry a few LCACS in its hull.

I think its awesome that the Coast Guard is growing some fangs.
