Ocracoke Island

Ocracoke is consistently ranked in the top ten beaches in America. Tonight I was able to take a sunset walk on a beach that is over 100 yards wide from the dunes to the water. The only people on the whole beach from horizon to horizon? Just me and my lovely wife.

We were surrounded by wildlife. There were ghost crabs scuttling around and digging their burrows, sandpipers tooling across the damp sand on blurred legs with their heads down, digging up sand fleas, and monstrous low flying pelicans. We didnt see any dolphins swimming tonight, but the week is still young.

There were also several sections of the beach that were posted as offlimits because of sea turtle eggs in the area.
