Rebuilding At Ground Zero

Construction on Freedom Tower began today. I bet that really pisses off Moslems.

From Reuters here:

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Bulldozers rumbled into a giant pit on Thursday to begin building a new skyscraper to replace the World Trade Center in an act New York’s governor said symbolized the city’s comeback from the September 11 attacks.

Work on the Freedom Tower at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan began a day after developer Larry Silverstein and the land owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, resolved long-running acrimonious disputes over money, security and design.

The 1,776-foot (540-meter) tower will be among the tallest in the world.

“We are not going to just build low in the face of a war against terror,” New York Gov. George Pataki said. “We are going to soar to new heights and reclaim New York’s skyline.”

The site will include three other high rises plus a residential tower that will surround a memorial, museum and cultural center dedicated to what relatives of the September 11 victims consider a sacred site.

Construction is scheduled to be finished by 2011 or 2012.

On my last trip to New York, despite that it was below freezing outside, I made a point of visiting Ground Zero, and it was immense. Now that rebuilding has finally begun, we can celebrate the completeness of Al Queda’s failure to intimidate America.

America is obviously divided politically, but I daresay that this nation is stronger than ever, both economically, and with a spirit of purpose. I can’t wait to see the new Freedom Tower when its completed.

  • I am happy that Ground Zero is being rebuilt. I hope it helps to heal wounds and build an even stronger bond and sense of pride among Americans and people of the world who were devastated by the tragic events of 9/11.

Not all Muslims are part of Al Qaeda. In fact, very few are. So, just to make the point, not all Muslims feel upset about Ground Zero being rebuilt. And, I even dare say that some Al Qaeda members are not unhappy that it is being rebuilt for various reasons that I’ll keep to myself. (I unfortunately am a great player of “Devil’s Advocate”.)

  • I know that not all Muslims are AlQueda. But since all Moslems believe that non-believers should be slain or brought into submission in the name of Allah, seeing their greatest attack on the Great Satan so easily shrugged off gnaws at them on a spiritual level.

  • I see your point. I worry for us all. We need to be accepting of each other and stop letting books written before we were born control our destinies. That’s just my 2 cents.

  • Wouldnt that be refreshing? Religion is supposed to refreshen the spirit, not shackle the soul.
