8th Annual Fragile X Poker Run
Jul 18th
Its actually my seventh year in a row riding tailgunner in the SSR down the Blue Ridge Parkway to beautiful Laurel Springs, North Carolina.
Full details of the Poker Run trip can be found at Fraxa.Org here. If you would like to make a donation to this worthy donation that is battling to find a cure to a genetic disorder that is attributed to, among other diseases, autism, you can find an online donation form here.
The highlight of the annual ride is US route 421, better known as “The Snake.” At the general store at the tail end of The Snake are many fenders, helmets and other bike parts left over from reckless motorcyclists like the pair in the video below. Reckless, but awesome.

Rain on the Snake
Jul 20th
I finally got around to posting some pix and videos up. Here is the group that rode on that wet Saturday down US route 421 from Shady Valley Tennessee. The roads were slick, and this was filmed on one of the first big switchbacks, and no one was moving too quickly.

Multi-Robb
Jul 17th
A bunch of us were playing around with the Photosynth app for the iPhone. This is Dan’s trick of putting Robb in many of the panorama frames for a hilarious effect.

A great shot from yesterday showing the outcrops at the Raven’s Roost Overlook on the Blue Ridge Crest.
The weather is a little misty this morning as we prepare to set off on the Poker Run to the Shady Valley Country Store in Tennessee. More updates to come.

Would Love to See This on the Poker Run This Year
Jul 8th
I’m just over a week away from my annual trek down the Blueridge for the Fragile X Poker Run.
Before I go, there are lots of chores I need to do. I gotta wash the SSR, grab my big boy wine glass, and get one of my buddies to wear this epic helmet!
Thanks to [GAS] for the link!

As always, a highlight of the ride is on the Striped Snake with its 489 curves.
Check out this great video which really gives you a feel of the ride.

Great News for Fragile X Research
Apr 30th
Novartis has taken a step closer to creating a drug that will alleviate some of the neural problems suffered by those with the Fragile X genetic disorder. And researchers are also hopeful that the drug may be able to treat autism too.

From the NYTimes here:
An experimental drug succeeded in a small clinical trial in bringing about what the researchers called substantial improvements in the behaviors associated with retardation and autism in people with fragile X syndrome, the most common inherited cause of these mental disabilities.
The surprising results, disclosed in an interview this week by Novartis, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant that makes the drug, grew out of three decades of painstaking genetic research, leaps in the understanding of how the brain works, the advocacy of families who refused to give up, and a chance meeting between two scientists who mistakenly showed up at the same conference.
“Just three years ago, I would have said that mental retardation is a disability needing rehab, not a disorder needing medication,” said Dr. Thomas R. Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, who was told of the Novartis trial results. “Any positive results from clinical trials will be amazingly hopeful.”
The gene for fragile X was discovered in 1991. Work since then has found that fragile X patients seem to experience an overload of unchecked synaptic noise — synapses being the junctions between brain neurons. The Novartis drug and others like it are intended to lower the volume of this noise so memory formation and high-level thinking can take place, allowing children to develop normally.
Believe it or not there are lots of Aspergers and Autism advocates that do not want a cure for the disease because they feel that the disease is what makes them special or extraordinary. But most families will be relieved to get their hands on a cure.

My Loser Cruiser
Jul 19th
My Chevy SSR encountered a rock on the Blue Ridge parkway and it flattened by front passenger-side tire. Since there are two different sizes of tire on the SSR you can’t carry a spare. Instead, it comes with an inflation kit- an electric airpump, powered by a cigarette lighter adapter, and a bottle of sealant. But in my case this kit was useless as the rock gashed the sidewall of my tire.
Luckily I was travelling with good friends who helped me get the disabled truck off the Parkway and into a repair shop. They also got me to a car rental agency 5 minutes before closing on a busy Friday night. Unfortunately all of the vehicles were picked over. The only thing left was a broken Chevy Uplander that was looked and smelled like someone had transported the losing Iditarod dogsled racing team in it. We dubbed it the Loser Cruiser and I was its captain.

High Gas Prices and Old Pumps
Jul 21st
Many old pumps still in use just weren’t designed to dispense fuel at prices higher than 3.99 per gallon. Its almost like a Y2K issue brought about by democrats refusing to drill for more oil. But the stations owners have found a way to get around this problem. Below is a photo of the gas pump at the Country Store in Shady Valley, TN. Its at the midpoint of the “striped snake,” a twisty road that is a joy to drive.
And here is the sign on the pump.
