Human Giants Spoof David Blaine

I don’t hate David Blaine because he’s a magician.  I hate him because he uses his street tricks to make people think he has supernatural or spiritual powers.  That, and the eco-tool Leo Dicaprio thinks he’s a god too.

Well comedy sketch group Human Giants (often seen on Best Week Ever), have an awesome video that completely lampoons Blaine and the schmucks who think he’s cool.  Click to watch the “Illusionators.”

Steven Spielberg Had Stolen Rockwell

I wrote about the Art Crime Team and its efforts to locate a stolen Rockwell painting of russian schoolchildren.  They found it.  It was hanging on Steven Spielberg’s wall.  He either has to give it back to the rightful owner or pay the owner for what it is worth.  Chalk up another recovery for the ACT.

Sweetness and Light has the details.

Brangelina Takes the Net to Vietnam

Serial Adopters Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are in Vietnam with a big net, stalking the yards of the local “baby pound.” This time they are hoping to rustle up a Vietnamese boy around the age of 3.

From US Weekly here, again with mad props to BWE:

As Us Weekly first reported, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are in the process of adopting a child from Vietnam.

“Yes, they have started the procedure to adopt a child in Vietnam,” Vu Duc Long, director of Vietnam’s International Adoption Agency, confirms to Us Weekly.

Jolie and Pitt visited Vietnam last Thanksgiving, and toured the Tam Binh orphanage on the edge of Ho Chi Minh City. The couple reportedly wants to adopt a boy around 3 or 4 years of age.

I predicted this and even wrote a startling news article from the future here.

Worst Oscars Evah?

That seems to be the consensus. And unlike the so-called “consensus of scientists on climate change,” this time its a real consensus. Proof here, here, here and here.

I watched all four hours. Not really, my wife watched, and I sat on the chez with my nose in the laptop. But I could tell she was bored. And pissed too. Pan’s Labyrinth took way too many statues for such a crappy movie.  Al Gore’s stupid science fiction movie was treated like it was the holy grail while better movies about AIDS in China, Iraq Documentaries and the Gay Meth Preacher movie didn’t get anything.

All of America rolled their eyes when Melissa Etheridge won for best music. I mean C’Mon! It beat Dreamgirls? Can the shallow political views of the Academy be any more apparent?

I love Ellen Degeneres, and thought she did a pretty good job. But was she wearing a velvet tux? And what was up with that Vacuuming skit? I hope she comes back next year, and also hope she is not so self deprecating.

Comedy Gold came when I pointed out George Lucas’ enormous jabba-the-hutt chin to my wife. She was totally freaked out by it and she was fixated on it the rest of the night, uttering over and over, “Why have I never noticed that? Is that a disease? Its so gross! He could get a tuck!”

Honestly, you know why the Oscars sucked? The movies this year sucked.

Movie Review of Pan’s Labyrinth

To read other reviews, you would think that Pan’s Labyrinth is the best movie since Citizen Kane. It has even received a 96% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It was this high rating that made me want to see it on the big screen.

And I am very disappointed in the film. It was not a magical tour through a fantasy world of a girl’s mind, as it is most often described. It is a tour through the cruelty and viscera of a twisted Director’s mind. The part about a fantasy world seemed to have been thrown in to provide a separation in the non-stop violence depicted on screen. It was like watching a Dentist pulling teeth for two hours and occasionally you would say “Oh cute! Look at the faerie!”

The movie is about Ofelia, a ‘tween girl travelling with her very pregnant mother to go to live with her mother’s new husband, the very cruel and sadistic Captain Vidal. Ofelia, a huge fan of faerie tales, explores a nearby labyrinth and meets a giant talking billy goat who convinces her to embark on three quests so she can become the new faerie princess of the underworld. What follows is a lot of violence perpetrated by Captain Vidal, and much like the end of Resevoir Dogs and The Departed, everyone ends up dying. And as Ofelia laid dying, she imagined that she became the faerie princess of the underworld.

As some examples of the brutal violence, the director Guillermo del Toro had the fascist Franco soldiers under command of Captain Vidal shooting all of the wounded insurgents in the head. Two bullets each. There is an explicit torture scene, again courtesy of Captain Vidal, using a hammer to mangle a stuttering spaniard’s hand. Vidal also vividly beat a farmer’s face in with a wine bottle. And even when the evil Captain received his come-uppance in the form having his cheek split mouth to ear with a knife, the audience was treated to a prolonged shot of Vidal trying to sew his own cheek shut again with a fishhook needle.

The fantasy portions of the film were dark and creepy, and really only employed three major scenes. One scene is the labyrinth where Ofelia meets the faun. Another scene Ofelia must crawl through mud to forcefeed a giant bullfrog some pellets to cause it to puke up a key, and the third involves Ofelia and three faeries (two of which get their heads eaten off) who must enter a chamber to get a knife away from a monster.

So was the theme of this movie really about the horrors of war and its effect on a child? I really don’t think so. I think this movie was intended to shock and to “steal innocence.” The shock was in the form of the brutality of the violence. Ofelia’s sacrifice at the end was intended to represent a blood sacrifice for the sins of fascism, but even that came off poorly, and seemed more of a waste than a heroic deed. And perverting the childhood image of faeries for those that still treasure the idea of magical faeries is like telling a roomfull of 7-year-olds that there is no Santa. It is a tactless exercise in cruelty.

I Feel Violated and Dirty

My whole life has passed by so far without me sitting down on my living room sofa to watch violent gay porn. At least until last night.

We watched Jackass 2 on DVD. Those. Sick. Bastards! I was uncomfortable the entire time I was watching, and several times my wife had to leave the room. Once she puked in her mouth a little, but she’s pregnant, and I was surprised it didn’t happen more than just that one time.

But Knoxville’s gang of idiots have totally degraded from tasteless stunts to hard core man on man action. There was the streaking, the nut slaps, the glory hole and the snake, buttplay, and way too many ballsacks. I doubt I would have seen as much full frontal male nudity in most pornos.

Was it entertaining? Highly! I laughed many times, but I must confess that my favorite parts were when horrible injuries were inflicted. I took much delight when an anaconda munched on Johnny’s arm. But when it was over, I felt dirty.

Here’s to hoping they make Jackass 3, the plot of which should be a man orgy followed by the severing of limbs.

Fantasticar Unveiled

Not only is the next Fantastic Four movie going to feature Norrin Radd, aka Silver Surfer, but it will also debut the way-cool “Fantasticar” which is one of the coolest rides in all of Comics, ranking up there with the X-men’s Blackbird, the Batmobile and Johnny Blaze’s Ghostrider chopper.

From USA Today here:

The mileage is great, because it doesn’t use any gasoline. And traffic isn’t a problem, because it can zoom along at 30,000 feet. About the only problem with the Fantasticar is, well, it doesn’t exist at least in real life. It will, however, make its long-awaited debut in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which gets its first look here.

In the movie, the Fantasticar is powered by a proton accelerator, can hover, fly at 500 mph and break into separate flying machines.

Flattery worked 10 months designing and building the Fantasticar, which will enjoy a life after the movie in sequels and on the auto-show circuit.

Silver Surfer Movie

Actually, it is the Fantastic Four sequel that is due out in 2007, and its called Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I liked the FF movie okay, but didn’t like the treatment of Doctor Doom. I thought they blew it with his story of origin.

The sequel will feature Silver Surfer and I have yet to hear any details on the plot. If it follows the original story in the Fantastic Four, it should be an awesome story. Norrin Radd volunteers to serve the mighty Galactus (who is a hundred feet tall and eats planets for breakfast), in exchange for sparing his homeworld. Radd is transformed into the Silver Surfer and his job is to scout out new planets for Galactus to devour. This goes along quite well until Galactus spots Earth and wants to eat this planet for lunch. The Silver Surfer objects to devouring this planet because of its diverse population, and he rebels against Galactus with the help of the Fantastic Four.

I have never been a huge Silver Surfer fan. I always thought he was something of a cosmic navel-gazer. Most of his comics feature him pondering the beauty of the cosmos and wondering about his place among the stars.

That said, I think there is a lot riding on this sequel. If it is successful, it could spawn several fun Marvel Universe crossovers. Like the Hulk versus Wolverine. Or the Avengers, featuring Spider-man. If Surfer flops, it will doom the Fantastic Four films and may sour studios on comic book movies.

Hat Tip to Cinematical.

Stranger Than Fiction- Best Movie This Year

Will Ferrell delivered the performance of his life in the movie “Stranger Than Fiction.” It is also hands down, the best movie to hit the screens this year. Will Ferrell plays the part of Harold Crick, an IRS auditor with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder who leads a lonely, although structured life. But when he begins to hear a narration in his head, one that predicts that he is going to die, he struggles to find happiness and love in a futile effort to stave off his fate.

This is a dark romantic comedy that makes wonderful use of special effects to explore the quirks and mathematical computations that chronically fill Harold’s head. Maggie Gyllenhaal plays the role of Ana Pascal, a beautiful local baker and Harold’s ‘polar opposite’ love interest. Dustin Hoffman and Queen Latifa also star and deliver wonderful, subdued performances.

The movie is wonderfully directed by Marc Forster, who also did Finding Neverland. His directing style really got “out of the way” of a wonderful story and quirky plot, but also powerfully displayed the sterile, lonely existence that is Harold Crick’s life.

The color and photography of the film is equally smart with its uses of sterile, fluorescent lighting and drab color of Crick’s existence, which only brightened when Harold finally accepted his pending fate and demise.

The story and emotion of this film should earn it a nomination for Best Film of the Year.

Spider-Man 3 Trailer is Out!

This looks like it is going to be the best Spidey movie ever. Thomas Haden Church plays the Sandman, and there is an awesome shot of Spider-man shoving Sandman’s face against a fast-moving subway car, and the Sand is peeling away from his head. In other sequence, you see that Harry Osborne comes back as the Green Goblin to have it out with Peter Parker. And if that’s not enough, Peter encounters the symbiont black suit. Once Peter rids himself of the black suit, the symbiont seeks out Eddie Brock, played by Topher Grace, who was injured photographing Spider-Man, and bonds with him, creating the ultimate Spidey bad guy, Venom. The picture below appears to be from the final encounter between Spider-Man and Venom. Click it to see the trailer.

Robot Chicken’s Calvin and Hobbes

You know, the funny papers haven’t been the same since Bill Watterson quit doing the Calvin and Hobbes strips. It was bad enough when Gary Larsen quit, and when Calvin left the papers, I stopped reading it altogether.

This is a great take on one aspect of Calvin and Hobbes that I always thought needed to be explored more completely, which is Calvin’s apparent psychosis and hallucinations which manifested itself as the stuffed tiger and best friend of Hobbes. Click on the pic to see the video.

Movie Trailer for Frank Miller’s 300

The trailer looks amazing. Every frame of this could be captured and used as a cool poster. But the storyline behind this movie is even more amazing. Click here to see the video or on the Picture below to watch the trailer.

Frank Miller wrote a graphic novel about the 300 Spartans that fought to the death against Xerxes and the Persian hordes at the battle of Thermopylae. The Spartans knew they were going to die, but their heroism and valor served to unite the Greek people against the Persians. It is awesome, so check it out.

Robert Downey Jr as Ironman!

Just like the comic book character Tony Stark, Robert Downey Jr. has faced some serious internal struggles and demons in his life. I hope he is over them and can really make the comic fandom proud of his portrayal in the upcoming Iron Man movie. And its directed by Jon Favreau, who will certainly lend the film its needed grit.

And according to the story, he is kidnapped and forced to build a weapon, just like his original storyline when the hero was introduced in Marvel. Back then, it was the Viet Cong. Who will it be now? Muslim extremists? I hope Marvel has the balls to make it so.

From Reuters here:

Robert Downey, Jr. is suiting up to star in “Iron Man,” a superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character.

Jon Favreau is directing the Paramount Pictures release. Filming is slated to begin in February in Los Angeles.

Downey will portray Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Using his intelligence and ingenuity, Stark instead builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to the U.S., he uncovers a plot with global implications and must don his armor and protect the world.

“The Marvel characters are not just about how high they jump or how fast they fly, they’re about their character flaws,” Feige said. “They’re about their inner demons. They’re about the struggles that they go through between being a man and being a hero.”

Downey, who has battled his fair share of inner demons, worked hard to get the role, getting in shape and even growing a goatee like the one Stark sports in the comic books.

“The point is, we looked at everybody, and we found the best person for the role. It’s as confident a casting move as we’ve ever done. The proof will be in the pudding, but he is Tony Stark.”

Dylan’s When the Deal Goes Down

I have never been much of a Bob Dylan fan. But if the other songs on his album are like this, and if he keeps putting Scarlett Johansson in his videos, I’m going to be a big fan. His latest album is “Modern Times,” which enjoyed a brief spot at number one on the Billboard Charts. This music video is from the song “When the Deal Goes Down,” and is beautiful in its 16mm format. It has a haunting nostalgia to it. And Scarlett is equally beautiful with her classic good looks and early 60′s costumes. Click on the pic below or here to see the video.

This video came by Way of Alphamonkey at TransBuddha. His site is awesome, and you should check it out regularly.

LonelyGirl15′s Creators Speak Out

The jig is up. Anyone who still does not realize that the video blogs by YouTube’s Lonelygirl15 are fake should take notice. The fictional character of Bree is played by a young actress named Jessica Rose.

From the UPI here:

The aspiring California filmmakers behind the popular lonelygirl15 Web site have said they were surprised at the attention garnered by their creation.

Med school dropout Miles Beckett, screenwriter Mesh Flinders, and lawyer Greg Goodfried said they created lonelygirl15 after they met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in April, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The three men started posting video blog entries featuring actress Jessica Rose portraying a home-schooled girl named Bree in June. Hundreds of thousands of Internet viewers on Web sites including YouTube questioned and debated the authenticity of the videos, which seemed to hint at a satanic plotline involving Bree’s family.

During the saga, the men became clients of the Creative Artists Agency in Beverly Hills.

“We did this with zero resources. Anybody could do what we did,” Flinders said Tuesday. He said the filmmakers used only “two desk lamps (one broken), an open window and a $130 camera” to film the segments.

“Our goal was to tell a very realistic fictional story in this medium,” Beckett said.

I tuned in to watch the webisodes as well and was intrigued at first. But as the storyline progressed, it became apparent that much of it was being contrived. If you want to see a cute girl video blogging and keeping it real, check out Bethany at RealVerse.
