The Federal Cyber DDoS- Its Not the Norkies

by Pat — Categories: Cyber, Politics1 Comment

There have been reports on Drudge and on HotAir that Federal sites such as Treasury, Secret Service (also treasury) and the Department of Transportation have been under a distributed denial of service attack. For some reason I fail to understand, people are blaming the North Koreans, a country that has hardly any cyber presence on the Internet at all, and lacks the training to conduct a massive attack.

Check out the communications capabilities of the Norkies at the CIA World Factbook here:

Telephone system:
general assessment: inadequate system; currently mobile cellular telephone services are available in Pyongyang only

domestic: fiber-optic links installed between cities; telephone directories unavailable; mobile cellular service, initiated in 2002, suspended in 2004; Orascom Telecom, an Egyptian company, launched mobile service on December 15, 2008 for the Pyongyang area only

international: country code – 850; satellite earth stations – 2 (1 Intelsat – Indian Ocean, 1 Russian – Indian Ocean region); other international connections through Moscow and Beijing (2008)

Internet country code:
.kp

Internet users:
NA

So do people believe that the Norkies are using telepathy to DoS the Federal systems? Because they sure don’t have computers to do it.

So who is it then? My guess would be the Chinese or the Russians- after all the DoS coincided with the visit of Obama to Russia. And the Russians have experience in creating cyber outages as evidenced by the cyber attacks on Georgia.
