Get a Masters in Beatles-ology
Mar 3rd
Well why not? You can get all kinds of goofy-ass degrees, and the goofiest is “women’s studies.” Why not get a degree in mastering the subject of the most popular Rock Band of all time?

From Reuters here:
A university in Liverpool has launched a Master of Arts degree in The Beatles, the city’s most famous sons, and called the qualification the first of its kind.
Liverpool Hope University says on its website that the course entitled “The Beatles, Popular Music and Society” consists of four 12-week taught modules and a dissertation.
“There have been over 8,000 books about The Beatles but there has never been serious academic study and that is what we are going to address,” said Mike Brocken, senior lecturer in popular music at Hope.
I guess with this degree you can work at a Record Store or a Starbucks.

Phishing Study- Server Re-compromise
Mar 2nd
Via F-Secure, a phishing study was done by Tyler Moore of Light Blue Touchpaper, focusing on the insecure webservers used in the attacks. Unsurprisingly, 76% of all phishing attacks are conducted using compromised webservers. And of those, one-fifth are re-compromised within six months.

We found that compromised machines accounted for 75.8% of all the attacks, “free” web hosting accounts for 17.4%, and the rest is various specialist gangs — albeit those gangs should not be ignored; they’re sending most of the phishing spam and (probably) scooping most of the money!
Sometimes the same machine gets compromised more than once. Now this could be the same person setting up multiple phishing sites on a machine that they can attack at will… However, we often observe that the new site is in a completely different directory — strongly suggesting a different attacker has broken into the same machine, but in a different way. We looked at all the recompromises where there was a delay of at least a week before the second attack and found that in 83% of cases a different directory was used… and using this definition of a “recompromise” we found that around 10% of machines were recompromised within 4 weeks, rising to 20% after six months. Since there’s a lot of vulnerable machines out there, there is something slightly different about the machines that get attacked again and again.
For 2486 sites we also had summary website logging data from The Webalizer; where sites had left their daily visitor statistics world-readable. One of the bits of data The Webalizer documents is which search terms were used to locate the website (because these are available in the “Referrer” header, and that will document what was typed into search engines such as Google).
We found that some of these searches were “evil” in that they were looking for specific versions of software that contained security vulnerabilities (”If you’re running version 1.024 then I can break in”); or they were looking for existing phishing websites (”if you can break in, then so can I”); or they were seeking the PHP “shells” that phishing attackers often install to help them upload files onto the website (”if you haven’t password protected your shell, then I can upload files as well”).
Phishing takes an enormous toll on the financial institutions as well as on the actual victims. Maybe it’s time for financial groups to get together and force webhosting companies to keep their vulnerable webservers updated? I’m not the litigious type, but a few well-deserved lawsuits might drive some hosting companies to adopt stronger defenses and patching routines to keep the cretins out of the systems.
What may prove a better tactic, however, may be some investments in these hosting companies. As a major shareholder, financial groups can better push a security agenda and can also be well-placed to gather evidence of compromises to use in prosecution.

Reason 512 to HomeSchool: Lesbian English Teacher Won’t French Your Daughter at the Bus Stop
Mar 2nd
Meet Angie Fetty. This English teacher spent years in college to earn a teaching degree and then decided to throw it all away for the chance to jam her tongue into the crotch of one of her teenage students. When cops heard about the Pennsylvania teacher who was molesting the child on a nightly basis, they followed her around and watched her make out with the student at the Bus Stop. Fetty confessed to the relationship on camera during a police interview. And like all teacher rapists, she was rewarded with time off and a full salary.

From WPXI here:
Angie Fetty, 34, an English teacher at Oil City High School in Franklin, is had an inappropriate relationship with a 16-year-old female student. Franklin city police started investigating the relationship after receiving a complaint that it had been going on since the fall of 2008.
A two-week investigation revealed Fetty was sharing a bed in her Franklin apartment with the student. Fetty admitted to police that she allowed the girl to stay the night with her.
Police said Fetty would take the student to the bus stop, and the student would take the bus to school while the teacher would drive herself so they wouldn’t be seen together.
“(We) observed them hugging and kissing in the car prior to her getting her out of the car,” said Mark Baughman, of the Franklin Police Department. “Ms. Fetty then proceeded to Oil City High School to her employment.”
School officials said Fetty was suspended with pay, pending the outcome of the case.
BadBadTeacher has much more, including rants by a supposed ex-boyfriend in the comments section who just seems butthurt that he has been tossed aside in favor of a teenage girl.

Knee Deep in Global Warming
Mar 2nd
I had to work from home today due to a large snowfall that blanketed the roads. My son helped me shovel the driveway and brush the snow from the car. He was bundled up so much that he often toppled over in the deep snow.

In other news, Professional Alarmist and NASA employee James Hansen urged people to protest at a Washington DC power plant today, calling the plant a “factory of death,” which I guess is what the Nazi’s used on the Jews in World War 2. How many coal-plants were used to exterminate 6 million jews? I forget. I think they only used one or two, because those coal-fired power plants are going to destroy the planet dontchaknow.
