Compulinx Screws Employees, Maybe Customers

Strictly speaking in terms of cash amounts, Terrence Chalk is a small time hood compared to Ken Lay and the way that Lay bilked investors of billions. But Lay was more of a ceremonial captain of the Sinking Ship Enron compared to Terrence Chalk’s Compulinx.

It could at least be argued that Lay was trying hard and made some stupid mistakes, or did not know the extent of the fraud going on at his company. The same could not be said for Terrence Chalk.

If Ken Lay was the captain of a sinking ship, Terrence Chalk was a crazed kamikaze corporate bomber, who took out his company, his employees, and his employees’ credit ratings with him when he went down. And as it turns out, he was ripping off his customers all along with phony claims of managed services.

The end of Compulinx came when Terrence Chalk was caught stealing the identities of current and former employees. He would take the socials and dates of birth from job applications and use the information to open up bogus lines of credit. He racked up over a hundred thousand dollars in bogus debt to finance his lifestyle. There are rumors that the identities of customers and business partners may have also been compromised. Now Terrence faces 1.65 centuries in jail if he is convicted.

From VarBusiness here:

One day after the arraignment of its CEO on identity theft and fraud charges, work at MSP firm Compulinx has come to a sudden halt, and Terrence Chalk’s claims of a robust business with an international client?le and a growing bottom line are looking more and more like smoke and mirrors.

Former business associates of Chalk say claims that Compulinx had hundreds of customers with data hosted on a massive IT infrastructure of 300 servers and 40 TB of storage in four data centers is nothing more than urban legend.

“[Chalk] got very politically connected, and he made a lot of promises that resulted in an image that he walked on water. But the bottom line is, he had one cabinet in our facility, that was it,” says Christopher Furey, CEO of Savvy Networks in Tarrytown, N.Y. “The other three data centers don’t exist.”

As for claims that Compulinx employed some 50 people, Furey, who has hired some former workers from his White Plains, N.Y., competitor, calls that claim “patently ridiculous.”

“There’s about six people left working there [at Compulinx],” Furey says.

Federal law enforcement officials Tuesday raided the White Plains, N.Y., home of Chalk, Compulinx’s CEO, and arrested the well-known Westchester County businessman with charges of stealing the identities of his employees in order to secure fraudulent loans, lines of credit and credit cards. Chalk, 44, was arraigned in federal court Wednesday along with his nephew, Damon T. Chalk, 35, on charges related to submitting some $1 million worth of credit applications using the names and personal information — names, addresses and social-security numbers — of Compulinx employees.

Since the arraignment, the Compulinx Web site has gone dark and phones at the White Plains company have gone unanswered. Numerous messages left on the Compulinx Services Center voicemail have not been returned.

In addition to the identity theft charges, Chalk is also charged with racking up more than $100,000 in unauthorized credit-card charges. If convicted, he faces 165 years in prison and $5.5 million in fines, prosecutors say. His nephew faces a maximum sentence of 35 years imprisonment and $1.25 million in fines.

Crash and burn. And set the town on fire.

Racist Tattoo Freak Scrubbed From Utah

Im not too sure what all this idiot did to be branded as “Public Enemy Number One” but he must be a bad man. That, and he has no apparent fears of needles.

He was nabbed for being a felon with a gun. From KUTV here:

Salt Lake County?s public enemy number one is behind bars this morning.

Curtis Allgier was arrested at a Midvale hotel early Saturday morning.

Deputies spotted his girlfriend in the area and called in the swat team.

Then, they say Allgier barricaded himself in his room, cut a hole in the ceiling and crawled into the attic.

He later fell thru the ceiling into another room, where he was arrested.

Allgier is a member of the Aryan Brotherhood, and a felon with a history of burglary, forgery and carrying weapons.

This guy had tattoos done to the insides of his ears! And another one on his adams apple! What an idiot.

UnAirable MythBusters Segments

Got this from Digg. I am a huge MythBusters fan, and was pleased to see this on YouTube. It is Adam and Jamie speaking at MIT, and showing a ten minute video of two MythBusters segments that the Discovery Channel refused to air.

The myths are, “Do girls fart?” And, “Can you ignite your farts?”

Hilarious, and a must see. Click the photo above or here for the video.

Saddam Will Swing

If you haven’t seen the video of the sentencing, you should. It shows a court, and a judge, both setup by the new government in Iraq, passing sentence on the madman who has embroiled this nation into a deeply divisive and deadly war. Click the pic to see the video.

You will see someone who rejects the notion of the Iraqis having their own government without him as their leader. Say what you will about the war in Iraq and America’s involvement, but this is a video showing the people of a nation standing up for themselves.

The war in Iraq is not over, and we will likely be there for some time to come, regardless of what happens on Tuesday. But this is a huge step forward for the Iraqi nation.

Skins Drop a Bomb on Dallas

It was the most amazing game ever in the history of the Redskins/Dallas rivalry. And I was there.

Except for that last miracle play. The Redskins blew a third down play to allow the Cowboys to get within field goal range with 3 seconds left in the game. While the Cowboys were setting up, I gathered my things and tried to beat the rush out of the stadium. I reached the escalators when the crowd went nuts.

The field goal had been blocked and returned to midfield by the Redskins, and with a personal foul facemask call, the Skins were in range for a game-winning field goal. I went back in to witness the miracle play of 2006. The stadium went crazy and players and fans rushed the field!

It was so nice to sweep the Cowboys in 2006. If the Skins lose the remainder of the season, this will still be a very memorable season.

Spear Phishing Getting Personal

There is a new type of targeted phishing attack that has had quite a bit of success lately. Its called “spear phishing.” Spear Phishing is a targeted attack against a single organization in which falsified or spoofed emails are sent to the organization’s user base asking them to click on a link. This is different from the standard practice of spamming large groups of people in hopes that some suckers will fall for the trap.

In many successful cases, the attackers use news about changes in health care benefits, raffles for prizes or even donations for a newborn baby to lure employees to a website that will install malware. Once this malware is installed, the attacker can worm into an organization through the backdoor, or install keystroke loggers to steal passwords to the critical infrastructure.

There was a huge spate of this going on nationwide a few weeks ago when the VML 0-day vulnerability was used to install drive by downloads.

Now comes a report that Dekalb Medical Center employees were lured to a site. Hat tip to slashdot. From Network World here:

Last week, a handful of employees at Dekalb Medical Center in Decatur, Ga., received e-mails saying they were being laid off. The subject line read Urgent employment issue, and the sender listed on the message was at dekalb.org, which is the domain the medical center uses. The e-mail contained a link to a Web site that claimed to offer career-counseling information.

And so a few employees, concerned about their employment status and no doubt miffed about being laid off via e-mail, clicked on the link to learn more and unwittingly downloaded a keylogger program that was lurking at the site.

Called targeted spam or spear phishing, this type of spam that s currently on the rise is particularly vexing because the spammer is able to spoof the sending e-mail address to make it look like it s coming from within the organization of the recipient, making it difficult for spam filters to catch. And, unlike traditional spam that is sent in the thousands, spammers are sending just handfuls of these messages at a time, again making it difficult for antispam technology to detect.

The IT department at the medical center found out about the scam when an employee in the HR department, who had received a frantic call from one of the scam s recipients, called the company s CIO. The first thing the IT department did was to set its Web filtering software to block all users from visiting the site linked to in the spam, says Finney.

This particular instance was a botched attack against Dekalb. The attackers chose a ludicrous and unbelievable way to trick users to click on their website, which is the threat of job termination. Had this attack been more subtle, such as updating the number of dependents for tax purposes, this may have gone unreported.

Zango Fined 3 Million Bucks

Zango is a new company, formed by the evil wondertwins of Hotbar and 180 Solutions. It didn’t take them long to run afoul of FTC regulations, which has been aggressive against spyware companies.

From the Reg here:

The company formerly known as 180Solutions has been fined $3m for using drive-by downloads to smuggle adware on the PCs of unwary Americans and for offering no way to remove the software.

Now called Zango, the adware firm has promised the Federal Trade Commission that it will ask consumers first before injecting software into their PCs. And it will provide the means for people to remove the hateful software from their computers.

That could be a lot of people. According to the FTC, Zango/180Solutions software has been downloaded on American computers more than 70 million times and has pumped out more than 6.9 billion pop-up ads. Much of Zango’s ‘success’ was down to rogue affiliates, who tempted consumers with offers of free software and then downloaded Zango software without their knowledge onto their computers.

I have written about the evil Zango Supervillains before here. Bottom line folks, there is no such thing as free ipods, or free Nintendo Wii’s, or free razor phones just for clicking on a stupid ad.

FBI Busts Carder Ring

The FBI made arrests against the credit card theft ring called “CardKeeper Forum.” the group specialized in stolen credit card and debit card numbers, and they traded the information online for cash. Such groups often use “mules” or middlemen in order to forward cash and credit cards to buyers and sellers in exchange for a slice of the profit. In fact, recent reports of spam to recruit such mules have been noted by Panda Software here.

From USA Today here:

In its latest crackdown on cybercrime, the FBI planned to announce Friday the arrests of 16 people in the USA and Poland suspected of participating in a website where stolen personal data were traded and phishing attacks were launched.

Individuals were arrested in Atlanta and Columbus, Ohio. Raids were conducted in New York, Texas, Tennessee, Nebraska, Georgia and Ohio, the FBI said.

Search warrants on three individuals in Romania also were performed this week as part of the ongoing investigation.

The actions against the Cardkeeper forum are the highest-profile since the Richmond, Va., division of the bureau started investigating the phishing attack on a bank in mid-2004. More than 100,000 credit and debit cards from more than 1,000 individuals were compromised.

“Cybercriminals will no longer be able to hide behind borders to conduct their illicit business,” James Finch, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, said in a statement.

Kanye West is a Psycho Sore Loser

Kanye West was able to tear himself away from his great big Box ‘O Porn long enough to throw a temper tantrum at the European MTV Music Awards.

He wanted to win Best Video so badly, that when he lost, he stormed the stage to complain that his video cost a million dollars and had Pam Anderson in it.

Hey Kanye, hear that high pitch whistle? Its your career coming crashing down.

From the AP here:

West apparently was so disappointed at not winning for Best Video that he crashed the stage Thursday in Copenhagen when the award was being presented to Justice and Simian for “We Are Your Friends.” In a tirade riddled with expletives, West said he should have won the prize for his video “Touch The Sky,” because it “cost a million dollars, Pamela Anderson was in it. I was jumping across canyons.”

Former Computer Associates CEO Gets 12 Years

This guy was more crooked than Ken Lay. Kumar actively participated in the fraud and was adamant about pushing his illegal book keeping tactics on his sales staffers and other executives.

From the AP here:

NEW YORK – The former chief executive of Computer Associates International Inc. was sentenced to 12 years in prison and was fined $8 million on Thursday for his role in a massive accounting fraud scandal at one of the world’s largest software companies.

Sanjay Kumar, 44, had faced up to 20 years behind bars after pleading guilty in April to obstruction of justice and securities fraud charges at the company, which since has been renamed CA Inc.

U.S. District Judge Leo Glasser said though Kumar was not a violent criminal, he “did violence to the legitimate expectations of shareholders.”

The indictment charged that Kumar and other executives instructed salespeople to complete deals after the quarter had closed a practice known within the company as the “35-day month” and “cleaned up” contracts by removing time stamps from faxes.

Air Force Cyber Squad

It seems that the Air Force wants to become an official major military cyber warfare command center.

The image above is from the Airforce Site, and shows what may be major points of the new Airforce Cyber Command. It says Detect, Deter, Deceive, Defeat, Disrupt and Defend.
From Reuters here:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The U.S. Air Force plans to set up what could become a major command aimed at safeguarding U.S. military and civilian cyberspace, Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne said on Thursday.

Wynne, speaking at a military communications and intelligence conference, said U.S. vulnerabilities in cyberspace included financial networks, satellite communications, and radar and navigational jamming.

Wynne said the new command would be part of the 8th Air Force based at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.

Wynne said he hoped the new command would eventually be on par with such major Air Force units as the Space Command and the Air Combat Command.

The new command will be led by Lt. Gen. Robert Elder, who would reach across all Air Force commands to draw the right people and capabilities, Wynne said.

Caveman’s Pregnancy Companion

Somehow, a trip out for a snack turned into a baby-book buying spree at the local bookstore. She got two books with full colors and diagrams that make me a little queasy when I look at them.

I got the Caveman’s Pregnancy Companion. It is well written, easy for a cro-magnon to comprehend, and it has great grilling recipes, recipes for home made salsa, recipes for mixed drinks, and there are even diagrams on how to give the best back rubs.

Best of all it has an interpretive guide to understanding pregnant woman phrases, such as “I have nothing to wear,” which really means, “I feel fat. Do something about it.” The chart goes on to offer the worst thing you could say, along with the best thing you could say.

Islam Means Misogyny: FGM

FGM is Female Genital Mutilation. And the United States will not tolerate any of that here, as Khalid Adem found out in Georgia. He took a pair of scissors and cut off the labia and clitoris of his 2-year old daughter. This was done to permanently make the girl subservient to all men, to deny her any sexual gratification, and to protect her honor.

Though the article refuses to say what religion this monster practices, make no mistake: He is a follower of Mo.
From the Atlanta Constitution here:

Adem, 30, was charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children more than three years ago and, if convicted, could face 40 years in prison. He was born in Ethiopia, where circumcision is a common procedure for young girls.

Police say Adem circumcised his daughter with scissors in his Duluth apartment, while someone else held the girl’s legs.

Authorities said the circumcision occurred sometime in 2001 but the mother didn’t discover it until two years later. The mother told police she learned about it while arguing with Adem about female circumcision. The mother told police that she told Adem she didn’t want that to happen to their daughter, but Adem implied the circumcision had already occurred.

The mother went to a doctor who confirmed that the girl had been circumcised. The girl then told Gwinnett authorities that her father had done it. He was arrested in March 2003.

The African practice of female circumcision has been denounced for decades by health and human rights activists. In some areas in Africa, it is considered a coming-of-age ritual.

Opponents claim the procedure, which may involve the removal of the clitoris or all of the external genitalia, is extremely painful, medically unnecessary and unsafe. It is illegal in the United States and has been condemned by the United Nations.

The centuries-old practice is performed for many reasons, including to curtail sex drive and preserve virginity. It also is a prerequisite for marriage in some cultures, experts say.

The jury convicted him. He cried when he heard the verdict, but didn’t shed a tear when he lopped off his daughter’s genitals.

From the Washtimes here:

Khalid Adem could be sentenced up to 40 years for his conviction of aggregated battery and cruelty to children charges, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Wednesday.

Adem, 31, cried after the verdict was read, the newspaper reported.

The Young Face of Evil

Sicko Gay Repeat Child Predator gets a Half-Millennium Behind Bars!

Parents, don’t let your kids participate in sleepovers unless you are volunteering to chaperon. Sick predators like this are out there, waiting and baiting your kids so they can literally slobber all over them. Now that the National Sex Offender registry is up and online, people should use it frequently to identify and track child predators in their neighborhood.

Zurikey McGhee was passing himself off as a 13 year-old, with the help of his mother, in order to get close to kids. He would wear children’s clothing, talk like a kid, ride skateboards and bicycles around children’s churches and playgrounds, in the hopes of befriending young 10 year olds. Once he got close, he would convince the parents to let the kids stay at a sleepover, where he would show the kids porno movies and molest them. Zurikey was not 13. He was 31.

He is now convicted of 80 counts of sexual assault on a child and will spend 508 years in jail. I hope the bastard rots.

From DenverPost here:

Centennial – A 32-year-old man who posed as a teenager to gain the trust of 18 boys and one girl he later molested was sentenced Monday to 508 years in prison.

The victims – ages 9 to 16 – and their parents filled the Arapahoe County courtroom as Judge Michael Spear read off his sentences for 80 counts against Zuri-Kye McGhee.

Over a five-year period, until he was arrested last year, McGhee pretended to be a 13-year-old to lure children into sexual activities. He sometimes impersonated Michael Jackson. Some victims said McGhee molested them hundreds of times, sometimes during sleep overs.

In the 1990s, McGhee was charged with 23 felony counts of criminal sexual contact with minors in New Mexico. In 1998, he pleaded guilty to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and served a year in jail.

Somehow his twisted mother was in on the act. From CNN here:

His 54-year-old mother is accused of helping him in some cases by introducing him to families with young children, and she is scheduled to stand trial in February.

Details of the heinous crimes are outlined in DenverChannel here:

McGhee allegedly showed young victims adult videos and then performed sexual acts on them.

The grown man allegedly used his youthful appearance to pose as a teenager and hosted sleepover parties for juveniles at motel. He also sometimes dressed like Michael Jackson, detectives said.

Aurora police believe there are at least 18 victims, mostly boys between 9 and 13.

Investigators believe that McGhee met some of the alleged victims by volunteering at local schools, churches, etc.

Some of the parents said they were fooled by McGhee’s polite behavior and his use of prayer to indicate he was religious. He also rode bikes and skateboards, appearing to be in his teens to the parents.

They need the death penalty for cases such as this. Hat Tip to Crimene.Ws

Kerry: I Botched the Joke

Kerry tried to give a half-hearted back-handed excuse for his horrible remark that defamed the troops in Iraq when he said that they were too stupid to avoid military service. He said it was a “botched joke.”

The troops in the field have responded. This was not a botched joke. You see, even when it comes to humor, the servicemen outdo the former Democratic Presidential contender. Thanks again to HotAir.

Microsoft Error Report Monitoring

ISS RealSecure recently rolled out a new detection capability- capturing reports to Microsoft regarding crashed applications.

Many analysts may not know what to do with these reports. I scour them looking for unusual or unauthorized applications that have crashed, which would alert me to weaknesses or malware on networked hosts.

What crashes most often? By far, the most applications that crash goes in this order:

  • Word
  • Outlook
  • Excel
  • Internet Explorer
  • Acrobat Reader

This does not mean that these applications are the most buggy. Most likely it means that they are the most used.

John Kerry Hates the Troops

He thinks they are too stupid to avoid military service. Which simply is not true. I have the pleasure of working with members of the Armed Forces. To a man, they are by far the brightest, most energetic and patriotic people I know.

The GOP has a new ad today showing John Kerry’s comments, saying that if you don’t work hard enough in college, you end up getting stuck in Iraq. So I guess he means that everyone who abandoned their normal lives to serve the country after the attacks of 9-11 were just too stupid to know better? Click on the pic below, which takes you to Hotair to watch the ad.

Kerry is an elitist snob who just couldnt help but interject himself into this election season. He has made personal attacks on George Bush, who, last I checked, wasn’t running for re-election. I wasn’t going to blog about this because I got the impression that Kerry really was trying to make a remark to disparage Bush. But the rest of the country feels that he attacked the intelligence of the troops. Either way, Kerry is like the Joe Pesci character in Home Alone, who, obsessed with McCauley Culkin, keeps running his face into hurtling paint cans and slipping on Micro Machines.

To top everything off, Kerry lashed out during a Press Conference, refusing to apologize for his stupid remarks. He called all republicans “Despicable.” In response to this, a pal of mine said:

Kerry doesn’t friggin’ care for the military one single bit, despite his veiled protestations. He actually thinks they’re stupid. What other conclusion can you come to from that statement even in its correct form? So far, I’m not seeing anything remotely apologetic. I don’t think we’ll ever hear him apologize. Maybe in 2004 when somewhere around 70% of the men and women in the Armed Forces voted Republican says that they saw something that (thankfully less then half of the rest of us) “smart” people didn’t see. Say what you will about our President, but that speaks volumes to me about the real intelligence of our military… But what do I know; I’m a.. (hmmm, what did Kerry say I was? Oh Yeah,) despicable. Thanks for the nice words Johnny… Thanks so much for letting us know now before it’s too late and 2008.
