Do You Remember Where You Were When This Happened?
Apr 24th
Some events in life are so tragic you remember exactly what you were doing when it happened- such as the Challenger explosion, the Trade Center attacks, and this below- the introduction of NEW COKE. 25 Years ago.

From the AJC here:
Twenty-five years ago Friday, Coca-Cola executives stepped up to a podium at the company’s headquarters and told the world that the old Coke formula was being shelved in favor of something called “New Coke.” As the ads said, you were gonna love it.
The story of New Coke is still taught in business schools, and not in a good way. Coca-Cola, anxious to fight off a challenge from Pepsi, had forgotten its fans’ deep psychological connection with the brand. It hadn’t asked them if they would mind if the 99-year-old Coke formula disappeared. The result was perhaps the biggest marketing blunder of the century.
Within weeks, protests broke out, callers lodged thousands of calls to Coca-Cola headquarters and shoppers poured New Coke down gutters. After three months, the company acknowledged its mistake. It reintroduced the “classic” formula, which remains the top-selling soda in the U.S. New Coke lingered on through the late 1990s, but the world had passed it by.
I remember discovering a case of original Coca-Cola in a gas station on the West Virginia border. I snatched the whole thing up and enjoyed it that week.

I’ll Drink to That!

VA ABC stores are going to begin liquor tastings beginning in July.

From WVEC here:
Tastings at Virginia ABC stores will begin on July 1, officials announced on the ABC Facebook page.
Officials say the governor signed legislation passed by the General Assembly in January.
Tastings will be conducted by an employee or representative of the spirits or farm winery that gets a permit.
Spokeswoman Becky Gettings says the rules are similar to those for restaurants, such as a maximum limit of three ½ oz. samples per person of legal age and that the vendors choose the product(s) they wish to showcase.
I don’t know if you can go from one liquor store to the next, but I think you can have some fun trying new liquors.
Are You Ready for the PickleBack?
Apr 15th
Its a trendy new drink featuring whiskey and pickle juice. And they say its yummy!

From News-Leader here:
Guy walks into a bar and orders a shot of whiskey followed by a chaser of pickle juice. Except, it’s no joke. The lip-puckering combination, called a pickle back, is morphing from insider’s secret to trendy drink.
And New York bartender Jason Littrell says it’s quite tasty, provided you use good quality brine. “Conceptually, I can see how it wouldn’t make sense, but once you try it then it’s like — OK, I get it. It’s just delicious,” he says.
As with all good bar stories, the origins of the pickle back aren’t particularly clear. It’s generally held to emanate from New York and can be found in a number of bars there. It can be a shot of bourbon followed by a shot of pickle brine, but more often than not starts with a shot of Jameson Irish whiskey.
Okay, I love pickle juice. Whenever I finish a jar of pickles, I usually drink most of the brine. Probably not good for me, but I love dill, salt and water, what can I say? I might try this concoction at my next party.
